Abstract

In open economies, businesses are dependent on and influenced by random events taking place in outside arenas. It is a statistical reality that the best ideas lie usually outside the company. Therefore, if businesses wish to remain relevant in the current high velocity environment, they need to re-imagine how to strategically engage with the right skills, to do the right work at the right time in a consistent and frequent manner. This requires a change in culture and philosophy by adopting a “blended workforce mindset” to deal with digital and talent transformation.

In recent years, the talent on-demand ecosystem has evolved substantially. Three main types of platforms emerged to fill the gap; these are: marketplaces for premium talent (Toptal, Catalant, Cognisium, Comatch etc), crowdsource innovation (Kaggle, InnoCentive) and marketplaces for freelance workers (Upwork, Freelancer, etc).

In a recent Harvard Business School study, 90% of the C-suite leaders surveyed indicated that they view the on-demand marketplace platforms to be “core to their ability to compete”. This of course requires a change in talent policies; smart companies will need to hire experts who will test their thinking, stretch their worldview and unlock hidden or latent value within the organization. Engaging with the “on-demand workforce” also requires overcoming resistance, business model innovation, re-inventing the employee value proposition and ultimately re-shaping the culture.

This talk will focus on the drivers and challenges of “on-demand expertise” and uncovering the building blocks of a successful blended workforce strategy.
